Ontario Tax Brackets 2025 & 2026 — The Complete Honest Table

Federal + Ontario rates, the surtax nobody explains, and what your next dollar is really taxed at.

Ontario income is taxed twice — once federally, once provincially — and Ontario adds two extras most bracket tables skip: a surtax that multiplies provincial tax at higher incomes, and a health premium of up to $900. Here are the real numbers.

*2025's first-bracket rate is 14.5% — the blended result of the federal cut from 15% to 14% that took effect July 1, 2025. From 2026 the full-year rate is 14%.

Ontario provincial brackets (2025)

$150,000 – $220,00012.16%
Over $220,00013.16%

The surtax — Ontario's hidden multiplier

Ontario charges surtax on your provincial tax itself: 20% of Ontario tax above $5,710, plus another 16% above $7,307 (2025). That's why Ontario's real top marginal rate isn't 13.16% + 33% = 46.16% but 53.53% — the surtax turns 13.16% into an effective 17.9% at the top. The health premium (income-scaled, capped at $900) rides on top.

FAQ

Are the 2026 brackets final?
Federal and Ontario thresholds index to inflation each fall; the ~2% figures here are projections and are flagged as such. The 14% federal first rate for 2026 is legislated. We update this page when CRA publishes finals — typically November.
Why did my average tax rate differ from my bracket?
Brackets are marginal — each rate applies only to income inside that slice. An $80,000 Ontario earner is "in" the 29.65% combined bracket but pays about 26.7% average once every lower slice and credit is counted.
What is the basic personal amount?
Income you pay no tax on: $16,129 federally (2025, credited at the first-bracket rate) and $12,747 in Ontario. Both index annually.
Does RRSP contribution change my bracket?
RRSP deductions reduce taxable income directly — a $10,000 contribution at $80,000 income saves roughly $3,115 in Ontario, more if it pulls you under a surtax threshold.
